Engagement Photography Ideas

Here are 3 super-fun, out-of-the-box engagement photography ideas that will inspire you for your own session!

Miechelle’s love for vintage clothing inspired her for a really unique engagement session. She and her fiance Jeff knew a friend who restored antique automobiles and asked him if he would let them pose with it. Well, if you know any antique automobile enthusiasts, you realize that they will jump at the chance to have their “baby” photographed!

Next, they came up with the perfect location: Ashtabula, Ohio is known for its many covered bridges and knowing the area well, the couple quickly came up with the most picturesque bridge in the area.

It was a warm spring day when the couple arrived in their period attire. I had the truck positioned to get a great view of the bridge in the background. Miechelle had various scenarios in mind, including the old: “engine broke down and I’m waiting for my honey to fix it”. I made sure that most of the images had that old bridge in somewhere.

For one scene, I had them stand next to the truck and move in for a soft kiss. I snapped just before their lips touched and when I reviewed it, I noticed something wonderful: Not only was their kiss captured, but there was also a perfect silhouette of the couple that magically appeared in the rear window of the vehicle! It was almost as if they were actually transported back in time!

A Rocky River Ohio Engagement Photo Session in firefighting gear!

Kaylea and Nick are volunteer firefighters from Buffalo, New York. When they heard that I was offering engagement photo-shoots, they packed up their uniforms and headed west. Meanwhile, I “commandeered” a fire engine from the local fire department and it was sitting outside, all shined up and ready for our shoot!

I got some fun shots of the couple sitting on the front of the engine and on the side steps while the local firemen smiled with approval. Next, Kaylea and Nick made a quick change into less formal attire and we grabbed some shots of them sitting on a fence and also found a leftover bale of hay from a previous event that we used for a prop.

For our final set of photographs, we headed over to a local park where the lighting was perfect to capture some very romantic moments.

I love photographing couples prior to their wedding because we all get to know each other so well and are almost like old friends when the time comes for their nuptials.

Bride’s photo session in a cemetery!

Since he was camera shy, Janine’s fiance opted out of their engagement session. But Janine really wanted to get some photos taken prior to their wedding. So what to do...what to do?

How about a bride’s style shoot in her wedding dress! Now, there’s one thing left to decide on: where should we go for the shoot?

When I learned that Janine’s theme for her wedding was gothic, this ethereal place quickly jumped into my mind--Lakeview Cemetery! With my experience in photographing style shoots, I instinctively knew that Lakeview’s myriad assortment of mausoleums, lush gardens and tall, stately trees would contrast nicely with her autumn red hair, full length, form-fitting dress and long flowing veil.

On a cool October evening (the eve of her wedding day!) we began our shoot. Janine pranced throughout the enchanting vista, pausing at the Garfield Memorial where we captured some of the evening’s most iconic images. At the top of the building, Janine danced with the red ball of sun, which was quickly disappearing behind the tree canopy.

At one point, a puff of breeze suddenly lifted her veil up around her and I snapped in unison. As you can see here, the resulting image was truly magical! Watch the video below to get the backstory!
