Wedding Makeup artistry for an unusual Bride

I sat down with nationally known makeup artist, Leslie Shayne Kohn to get some of her thoughts about a most unusual “engagement session” with my client, Janine.

Since Janine and her fiance, James, weren’t really into the typical engagement poses, and James opted out of it altogether, Janine decided to go solo.

Janine had chosen black gloves and a form fitting dress with an extra long flowing veil that contrasted marvelously with her flaming red hair. Thinking about this unusual combination of eclectic accessories, I thought about how well Janine’s lively outfit and playful personality would contrast with the neutral colors of stone and ironwork in Lakeview Cemetery.

While Janine danced about, whirling and laughing, I followed as a paparazzi, clicking away and egging her on. The wind catching her veil made for some breezy candid moments. As she became more and more comfortable with my camera, she showed me her many moods. The expansive stairway of the Garfield Memorial made for some really striking images, especially as the late afternoon sun melted into a soft amber glow.

One of the photographs from our session there won several awards for wedding photography at the Mideast States Regional Convention (Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky), one of which was “Best Bridal Portrait”. I called it “Prisoner of Love”.

But the “award” that I treasure the most was the awesome experience of working with Janine at a location that can only be described as, well, haunting
